Two inches of twisted steel, and every one of them is there for a reason. The Kestrel takes its name from the small falcon that holds still against the wind and then drops with total precision. It is a small knife built the same way. It is compact and wide through the blade, and it is steady enough to trust with close, careful work.
The Forge
The blade begins as layered Damascus steel. During forging, the billet is twisted on itself, and the straight layers become the ripples that run along the flat. No two Kestrels carry the same pattern, because no two billets twist exactly alike. The blade is 3.53 mm thick and 1.5 inches at its widest point, which is a lot of steel for a 2-inch blade. That width gives the edge solid backing for its size.
In Your Hands
At 183 grams, the Kestrel is heavier than most knives its length, and you notice it the moment you pick it up. The weight comes from the build. A polished metal bolster sits at the front of the handle and black micarta at the back, both pinned through to the frame. Micarta is a layered resin composite that keeps its grip when your hands are wet or cold. A thumb stud swings the blade open, and a liner lock holds it there until you release it. It ships with a leather sheath to carry it in.
The Passing
Small knives tend to stay in families longer than big ones. They live in a pocket, a desk drawer or a tackle box, and they turn up years later still working. Keep the Kestrel oiled and it will slowly take on a patina from the hands that use it, until the twist pattern looks like it always belonged to its owner. Then it gets passed on.
